US authorities seize web domains linked to Russian election interference effort

In September 2024, the US Department of Justice seized over 30 web domains used by the Russian government in attempts to influence the 2024 US presidential election. The sites were linked to “Doppelganger,” a Russian information manipulation campaign designed to spread pro-Russian narratives through cloned websites, fake articles, and inauthentic social media engagement. Russian officials, including Sergei Kiriyenko – a top aide to President Vladmir Putin – were named in the DOJ court filings as being involved in the effort. The domains spread narratives that aimed to sway opinions in swing states, promote isolationist sentiments around US aid to Ukraine, and amplify false information about the assassination attempt against former President Donald Trump. The Treasury Department also sanctioned top RT figures and individuals linked to the RT-linked Russian hacking group RaHDit, while the State Department restricted visas and offered a $10 million reward for information on RT-affiliated hackers.
