U.S. Congressional Committee alleges Russian campaign to covertly fund activist groups to influence U.S. energy policy
On June 29, 2017, the Chairman of the U.S. House of Representatives Committee on Science, Space, and Technology and Chairman of the Subcommittee on Energy submitted a letter to the Treasury Department outlining an alleged Russian government campaign to covertly fund environmental groups in the United States to influence U.S. energy policy. According to the letter, the Russian government actively funneled “millions of dollars through various non-profit entities to influence the U.S. energy market.” Specifically, “the Russian government and complicit parties” allegedly utilized shell companies to launder money to environmental groups to “execute a political agenda” beneficial to Moscow’s interests.
