U.S. and European officials allege Russian government executed information operation to spread disinformation during NATO debate in Sweden
Over the summer of 2016, Sweden experienced a barrage of anti-NATO disinformation amid domestic political debate over the potential for military cooperation with NATO. False rumors circulated on social media regarding the Alliance’s plans to stockpile nuclear weapons in Sweden, NATO soldiers raping Swedish women, and NATO’s ability to launch an attack on Russia from Sweden. According to The New York Times, “numerous analysts and experts in American and European intelligence point to Russia as the prime suspect.”
