In December 2018, nine days after Huawei CFO Meng Wanzhou was arrested in Vancouver by Canadian authorities, two Canadian citizens, Michael Kovrig and Michael Spavor, were arrested in China for allegedly endangering Chinese national security. One of the Canadians detained is a former diplomat. The Wall Street Journal reported days after the arrests that several former and current ambassadors familiar with the inner workings of the CCP saw the detention of the Canadian citizens as retaliation for the arrest of Ms. Wanzhou. Shortly after the arrest of Ms. Wanzhou, the Chinese Foreign Ministry threatened the Canadian government with severe consequences if she was not released. In June 2020, Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau stated that there was a direct link between the cases of Ms. Wanzhou and of the detained Canadians in China.
