Sweden and Lithuania accuse Russia of attempting to disrupt the construction of the NordBalt power cable
In May 2015, both Sweden and Lithuania accused Russia of using its navy to disrupt the construction of the NordBalt power cable. The power cable would connect the electricity markets of the Baltics to Scandinavia through Lithuania and Sweden and decrease both regions’ energy dependence on Russia. Russia is reported to have disrupted the cable’s construction on multiple occasions. In one instance, a Russian naval ship ordered a Swedish construction vessel to change course and in another, ships were ordered to stay away from the construction site as Russia would be conducting military exercises there.
