Suspected Russian hackers break into a Lithuanian news portal and spread false stories about the Lithuanian Minister of Defense
On January 18, 2018, hackers broke into a Lithuanian news portal and posted a fake story claiming that Lithuania’s Minister of Defense Raimundas Karoblis sexually harassed a journalist and several diplomats, and admitted to being a homosexual. Immediately after the story was posted, the hackers sent the story to Lithuanian government institutions and foreign embassies in Lithuania. According to the Atlantic Council’s Digital Forensic Research Lab, “The story was a result of a cyber attack on TV3’s website and was removed within five minutes. The attacker’s IP address was from St. Petersburg, Russia.” EU vs. Disinfo found further evidence that the attack originated in Russia, stating “the malicious code was injected into a hidden data field, description of which also shows an error message in Cyrillic (Russian) alphabet allowing investigators to assume that a Russian version of Microsoft Word software was used for the creation of the document.” According to the Center for European Policy Analysis, the attack “took place two days after Lithuania released the Magnitsky List, which names 49 Russian citizens banned from entering Lithuania for violating human rights.” Russian state-sponsored media outlets had previously targeted the Lithuanian Magnitsky Act with an information operation.
