Up to 600 accounts known to be affiliated with the Russian government, as well as state media outlets such as RT and Sputnik, heavily promoted the 2018-19 anti-tax and anti-immigrant Yellow Vest (“gilets jaunes”) protest movement in France. The coordinated inauthentic behavior focused heavily on violent or provocative incidents during the protests, as is common with information manipulation campaigns by Russia to showcase instability in Western democracies.
