On April 24, 2017, Russian state-controlled Gazprom signed a financing deal for the controversial Nord Stream 2 project. The new pipeline would double Russia’s capacity to export natural gas directly to Germany through the Baltic Sea, deepening Europe’s reliance on Russian gas and increasing Europe’s vulnerability to Russian influence. The pipeline is also viewed as a Russian attempt to divide Europe, as the project has caused divisions among member states of the European Union and NATO.
