Russian propaganda campaign blames the West for Belarusian-manufactured migrant crisis

Russian officials and state media launched a coordinated messaging campaign to falsely blame Western countries for causing a migrant crisis on the Polish-Belarusian border that was manufactured by Belarusian dictator Alexander Lukashenko. Russian officials insisted that Belarus was not responsible for the crisis, despite evidence that Lukashenko eased entry into Belarus for migrants who bought packages that included visas, flights, hotels, and transportation to the Polish border. Russian state media amplified President Vladimir Putin’s lie that Belarusian airlines had not carried migrants. Russian diplomats claimed that “Western nations’ policies towards the Middle East & North Africa” prompted the migrant surge. Moscow-linked Twitter accounts also highlighted instances of Polish forces violently pushing back asylum seekers and framed the European Union as hypocritical on human rights.
