Russian Nord Stream 2 pipeline seeks to divide Denmark, European U.S. allies

Russia’s Nord Stream 2 gas pipeline plans to partially traverse Danish waters in the Baltic Sea, demonstrating another instance of exploiting western European energy needs to pursue geopolitical ambitions. The proposed pipeline would undermine Ukraine’s prior contracts to supply gas to European states, and the company behind the pipeline, Gazprom, has been sanctioned on multiple occasions. The United States government and numerous energy experts have spoken out against new Russian gas pipelines to Europe, as they threaten Europe’s energy security by making it more dependent on Russian gas imports. Russian actors also appear to have spread disinformation regarding the pipeline, its effects, and U.S. opposition.
