Russian military intelligence agency (GRU)-connected hackers launch NotPetya malware attack  
On June 27, 2017, one day prior to Ukraine’s Constitution Day, according the CIA, hackers connected to the Russian military intelligence service (GRU) targeted Ukraine’s financial sector with the NotPetya virus that evolved into the most costly and damaging malware attack to date. Experts estimate that the NotPetya virus cost the world an estimated $1.2 billion dollars, as the ransomware crippled the operating systems of international businesses and organizations in over 150 countries.
