Russian hackers behind surge in cyberattacks targeting Ukrainian election
In January 2019, Ukrainian officials reported that Russian hackers were likely behind an uptick in cyberattacks targeting election servers and personal computers of election staff in the run up to Ukraine’s March elections. Officials described how hackers used virus-infected greeting cards, shopping invitations, offers for software updates, and other malicious phishing materials in an effort to steal passwords and personal information. The hackers also purchased personal details of election officials on the dark web.
