Russian forces take over Ukrainian media to spread wartime disinformation

Russian forces have taken over, impersonated, and shutdown local news stations in Ukraine to spread Kremlin-approved content and prevent accurate information from being shared. In April, Ukraine’s State Special Communications Service said eight stations were being used by Russian forces to target local populations in southern Ukraine with disinformation and propaganda. The Kremlin’s strategy involves capturing transmitter towers and switching off access to Ukrainian national programs as well as violently forcing Ukrainian journalists to spread pro-Russian views. If violence doesn’t work, Russian forces have taken over and impersonated media outlets. Without a satellite, citizens in occupied areas only have access to Russian state TV channels.
