Russian disinformation campaign targets Facebook users ahead of EU elections

On April 17, 2024, the non-for-profit research group AI Forensics released a report scrutinizing Meta’s inadequate moderation and monitoring of political advertisements on Facebook ahead of the European Elections. According to the report, between August 2023 and March 2024, 38 million French and German Facebook users were targeted with pro-Russian propaganda discrediting the EU and the war effort in support of Ukraine. Although the Russian disinformation campaign, known as Doppelgänger, was uncovered in 2022, AI Forensics suggested that it was “reaching five to 10 times more people than previously thought”. One week before the elections, researchers from AI Forensics and the Finnish software company Check First added that in the month of May alone, 275 anti-EU and anti-Ukraine political ads reached over 3 million Facebook users in France, Germany, Poland, and Italy.
