Russian disinformation networks appear to have acted to promote the Bernie Sanders campaign during the 2020 presidential primaries, while criticizing Joe Biden both during and after the primary season. U.S. officials briefed Senator Sanders on the operation, and assessed that Russia aimed to sow division more than seek a victor for any one candidate. Some social media posts boosting Sanders may have purported to originate from American voters but instead came from accounts linked to the Internet Research Agency. The Department of Justice describes the IRA as “a Russian organization engaged in operations to interfere with elections and political processes,” and Evgeniy Prigozhin, “a Russian oligarch who is closely identified with Russian President Vladimir Putin,” provides funding and support for the IRA.
