Jan Marsalek, an Austrian citizen working for the Russian military intelligence agency GRU, fed false information to the far-right FPÖ while they were in Austria’s governing coalition, leading to a police raid on the Austrian domestic intelligence service BVT. Marsalek conveyed allegations that the BVT was investigating the FPÖ via an anonymous dossier distributed by two BVT double agents. He then promoted the documents via the Austro-Russian Friendship society, actively targeting Russophile far-right politician Johann Gudenus to nurture his mistrust of the intelligence unit. As a result, on 28 February 2018, the premises of Austrian intelligence service were raided by local policemen looking for evidence of corruption and mishandling of sensitive data. The raid was ultimately signed off by the FPÖ-led ministry of interior. Evidence suggests that the Kremlin intended the operation to lay the groundwork for a rebuilding of the intelligence service under a new leadership more favorable to Moscow.
