Russia works with Ukrainian officials to spread disinformation

Russian intelligence operatives worked with current and former Ukrainian officials to spread disinformation intended to undermine the Ukrainian government, according to U.S. sanctions announced on January 20, 2022. Russian actors coordinated with two opposition members of the Ukrainian parliament, Taras Kozak and Oleh Voloshyn, to turn public opinion against Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky. Kozak owns several news channels, which he used to amplify disinformation about the Zelensky administration. Kremlin-linked agents also worked with two former Ukrainian officials, Volodymyr Oliynyk and Vladimir Sivkovich, to build support for Ukraine to formally cede Crimea to Russia and to collect information on Ukraine’s critical infrastructure.
