Russia suspected of orchestrating sabotage in Germany
On April 18, 2024, German authorities arrested two men in Bayreuth, a city north of Munich, under the suspicion that they were Russian spies planning to sabotage military equipment going to Ukraine. While both men were not formally charged, German authorities believed that one of the men was in contact with Russian intelligence and had been looking at a US military base in Germany as a potential target. The two suspected men were identified as Dieter S and Alexander J. Dieter S had been taking pictures and videos of military development and industrial sites and sending them back to his contact in the Russian intelligence service. Dieter S was also thought to have fought in eastern Ukraine for a Russian proxy between 2014 and 2016.
