Russia Pushing Coronavirus Lies As Part of Anti-NATO Influence Ops in Europe

In March 2020, a new EU report detailed a Russian attributed disinformation campaign working to spread coronavirus-related disinformation to exacerbate the impact of coronavirus, particularly in the West. The report listed Ukraine and Lithuania as two of the main targets of the campaign that is pushing fake news in English, Spanish, Italian, German, and French. In Ukraine, coronavirus-related disinformation led to unruly protests in which police and citizens were injured. These disinformation efforts advance a narrative that coronavirus is weaponized by the West, stoke societal divisions, and undermine the EU’s ability to successfully respond to the crisis.
