Russia launches cyberattack against Ukrainian government websites

Ukrainian authorities said that Russia was responsible for a cyberattack that temporarily took down 70 government websites on January 14, 2022. “All the evidence points to Russia being behind the cyberattack,” the Ukrainian digital transformation ministry said. The hack left a message on targeted websites reading, “Be afraid and expect the worst.” The threat was written in three languages—Ukrainian, Polish, and Russian—and referred to a point of tension between Poland and Ukraine, which was likely an attempt to frame Poland for the breach. Microsoft warned that the website defacements were designed to distract from a more destructive malware, which disguised itself as ransomware but was designed to disable impacted systems.
