Russia behind vandalism campaign in Estonia

On December 8, 2023, the Estonian Interior Minister Lauri Laanemets and his wife found out that their car had been vandalized. A few hours later, the Estonian Internal Security Service (KAPO) arrested Allan Hantsom, a pro-Russian activist living in Estonia, over the incident. KAPO found that Hantsom was part of a long chain of command, which eventually traced back to the GRU, Russia’s military intelligence agency. He also belonged to a political party in Estonia that supported Russia’s invasion of Ukraine and was a contributor on Kremlin-sponsored propaganda outlet Sputnik Estonia. Estonian security services found a list of targets that included prominent politicians and journalists who had exposed Kremlin propaganda on the war in Ukraine with Estonia’s Russian-speaking population. KAPO also arrested many more vandals tied to organized crime who did not know that the GRU was their ultimate sponsor.
