Russia behind attempted arson on Prague bus depot

On June 10, 2024, Czech prime minister Petr Fiala announced that a failed arson attack at a bus depot in Prague was part of a Russian sabotage campaign. A “Spanish-speaking man originally from South America” poured gasoline on three buses and lit it up, causing an estimated 200,000 Czech crowns (USD $8,738) in damages, before depot employees extinguished the fire. The man had been in the country five days prior to his arrest. CCTV footage showed a dark-haired man assumed to be the suspect purchasing materials at a gas-station and information found on his mobile phone incriminated him. Czech police arrested and held him on terrorism charges. If found guilty, the suspect could face up to 20-30 years in prison. Czech Interior Minister Vit Rakusan warned of possible similar attacks in other European cities following the attempted arson.
