PRC detains relatives of RFA reporters for reporting on Xinjiang

The PRC detained family members of four US-based ethnic Uyghur journalists working for Radio Free Asia (RFA) to deter reporting on events in the Xinjiang region. The family members received jail sentences or were sent to reeducation camps. Many of the reporters were told by family members and friends living in Xinjiang that the authorities had asked them to stop the reporters from communicating with individuals and reporting on events in the region. One of the RFA reporters suspected the PRC of using voice recognition software to impede the reporters’ attempts to contact individuals in Xinjiang.
