Polish PM accuses Russia of targeting civilian aircraft with incendiary parcels

On 15 January 2025, Polish Prime Minister Donald Tusk announced that Russian had been planning “acts of terrorism in the air”. This statement was connected to a device at a transport company in Jablonow,  Poland, catching fire, as well as to DHL packages catching fire at warehouses in Birmingham, United Kingdom, and at Leipzig airport in Germany prior to being loaded onto a flight in July 2024. Western intelligence officials believe that the incendiary packages were test runs for future operations in the United States. US intelligence intercepted Russian communications planning to place similar incendiary devices on American flights. The type of fire created were magnesium-based, greatly complicating the extinguishing processes. Magnesium fires are made worse when water is applied and require special powder-based extinguishers.
