New York official charged as PRC agent

In September 2024, former New York state official Linda Sun was charged with 10 criminal counts, including violating the Foreign Agents Registration Act, visa fraud, alien smuggling, and money laundering. Her husband, Chris Hu, was charged in the money laundering indictment. Sun was accused of using her position as a senior state official to further the interests of the Chinese government and the CCP, including influencing state messaging and facilitating unauthorized access for Chinese officials. She notably ensured that New York state officials did not publicly address PRC human rights abuses in Xinjiang, removed references to Taiwan from state communications, and prevented meetings between Taiwanese officials and local officials. She and Hu allegedly laundered millions of dollars received from the scheme to purchase multiple homes and luxury vehicles. Both were arrested and are set for arraignment in federal court.
