NATO officials allege Russian government is behind false rape accusations against German soldiers
On February 14, 2017, Lithuanian politicians and media outlets recieved emails alleging the rape of an underage Lithuanian girl by German NATO soldiers. Lithuanian authorities found no evidence of the alleged rape. NATO officials stated that the email campaign was an attempt to undermine NATO presence in Eastern Europe, and that the Russian government likely perpetrated the operation. The false accusations resembled the fake rape “Liza case” in Germany that was widely spread by Russian state-sponsored media outlets.
