Leaked Kremlin files reveal efforts to sway 2024 EU elections

In September 2024, a major leak of internal documents from Social Design Agency (SDA), a Russian IT company sanctioned by the EU in July 2023 over its participation in the information manipulation campaigns that accompanied Russia’s invasion of Ukraine, exposed a Kremlin-coordinated online influence campaign aimed at swaying the outcome of the 2024 European Parliament elections. The documents, obtained by a consortium of European media outlets, detailed how SDAgenerated over 33.9 million social media comments and nearly 40,000 pieces of content including memes, videos, and fake comments designed to manipulate public debate. The operation targeted key EU member states including Germany, France, Spain, Italy, and Poland, with tailored narratives meant to undermine support for Ukraine, amplify far-right political parties, and discredit liberal and pro-EU narratives. Leaked instructions encouraged operators to pose as disillusioned citizens, exploiting issues like inflation, energy prices, and the Ukrainian grain dispute to stoke division and erode solidarity with Kyiv.
