Huawei Tech Centre opens in Serbia a week after a US-Serbia agreement on 5G
Recent concerns over the vulnerabilities that 5G will create and the potential for breaches in data privacy have caused many democratic countries to reduce their dependence on Huawei. On 4 September 2020, Belgrade committed to an American agreement not to use 5G equipment from untrusted vendors, largely interpreted to mean the Chinese tech giant. However, a week later, a Huawei Tech Centre opened in Serbia. Belgrade justified the continued partnership by interpreting “untrusted vendors” to mean shoddy craftsmanship, making the partnership between Huawei and the state-owned Telecom Serbia a reasonable step to take to ensure the development and implementation of 5G in Serbia. According to Chinese law, Huawei could be required to provide private data to the Chinese government.
