Huawei CFO, Meng Wanzhou, arrested in Canada over sanctions skirting
Meng Wanzhou, CFO of Chinese telecommunications giant Huawei, was arrested by Canadian authorities in December 2018. The Chinese Embassy in Canada released a statement refuting any wrongdoing and demanded Ms. Meng’s immediate release. Canadian officials stated that she was sought for extradition to the United States. Charges released in January 2019 confirmed that the United States was indicting Huawei with stealing technology and violating economic sanctions against Iran. Ms. Meng is the daughter of the CEO of the firm and is also deputy chairwoman of the board. Under PRC law, Huawei is obligated to participate in national intelligence work, has been credibly accused of cooperation with PRC intelligence agencies, and is owned ultimately by a trade union entity likely controlled by the CCP.
