Hacking group tied to Russian intelligence stole UK lawmaker’s emails

In January 2023, a hacking group believed to be affiliated with Russia’s intelligence services stole emails from a member of parliament in the United Kingdom, Stewart McDonald, who has expressed fears that the exfiltrated messages could be publicly released. The hackers accessed McDonald’s messages when he opened an email disguised as a military update about Ukraine from a member of his staff. The National Cyber Security Centre (NCSC) was already on alert about the Russian hacking group, which is known as “Seaborgium.” NCSC alleged the group is responsible for a highly targeted campaign against individual politicians, activists, and journalists. Previously, Seaborgium is said to have published hacked emails from former head of MI6 Sir Richard Dearlove and journalist Paul Mason.
