Hackers from Russian military intelligence agency (GRU)-connected Fancy Bear attempt to hack website of Dutch Safety Board
In October 2015, hackers of Russian military intelligence agency (GRU)-connected Fancy Bear, or APT28, attempted to gain access to the Dutch Safety Board’s (DSB) website, according to Trend Micro. The campaign involved setting up fake servers and conducting phishing attacks to collect credentials and gain access to the DSB’s servers. The DSB was investigating the downing of Malaysia Air Flight 17 (MH17), which it concluded was shot down by Russian-backed Ukrainian separatists with a Russian-made missile. The hack is suspected to have been part of an attempt to gain information regarding the investigation.
