French museum cancels exhibition following pressures from Beijing
On October 12, 2020, a French museum announced that it would be delaying an exhibition on Genghis Khan and the Mongol empire following pressures from Beijing. The Chinese authorities asked the museum to remove certain words from the exhibition (such as “Khan”, “empire”, and “Mongol”). In addition, the museum explains that Beijing asked for control over all the elements that would accompany the exhibited pieces (maps, texts, etc.) The Chinese authorities proposed a new synopsis “aiming to make the Mongol culture and history disappear completely in favor of a new national narrative.”
