Facebook removes suspected Internet Research Agency accounts for coordinated inauthentic behavior
On September 1, 2020, Facebook announced that it had removed “13 accounts and 2 pages, which had nearly 14,000 followers,” affiliated with the Internet Research Agency. The accounts and pages promoted a variety of disinformation narratives, including false claims about the coronavirus pandemic, Joe Biden, and the QAnon conspiracy theory. IRA members in some instances appeared to pose as editors seeking freelance journalists to write about polarizing topics. IRA activity also employed a website, “Peace Data,” including photos of purported staff that were generated using artificial intelligence software. According to the U.S. Department of Justice, the IRA is “a Russian organization engaged in operations to interfere with elections and political processes.” Evgeniy Prigozhin, “a Russian oligarch who is closely identified with Russian President Vladimir Putin,” provides funding and support for the IRA.
