Distributed Denial of Service (DDoS) attack disrupts Swedish media websites in a suspected warning from Russia
On March 19, 2016, a coordinated cyberattack disabled the online editions of several Swedish news outlets. The hackers used prolonged Distributed Denial of Service (DDoS) attacks to crash the websites. The attack took place just two days after the Swedish Security Service published its annual assessment of threats, which dedicated a chapter to Russian disinformation campaigns. A U.S. State Department cable noted that the Russian government is suspected of carrying out these attacks. According to Newsweek, “Sweden’s national police cyber crime unit said the network of computers used in the attacks was located in Russia.”
