Chinese students, allegedly with backing of government-supported association, harass speaker discussing Xinjiang
At McMaster University, Uighur activist Rukiye Turdush had several Chinese students shout to disrupt her speech about Xinjiang, and students apparently contacted the Chinese consulate in Toronto about the event. According to screenshots of messages between the students and consulate officials, the consulate reportedly told students to observe whether school officials attended the event. Subsequently, the university’s student assembly voted to de-certify the Chinese Students and Scholars Association for hiding “connections to the Chinese government” and “intimidating students on campus who speak out against the Chinese government”.
