Chinese student and scholar groups promote CCP values and ideology in Germany
Alongside more innocuous services for academic or social assistance, Chinese student associations in Germany appear to promote more problematic conduct as well. For instance, reports allege that at least one leader of a Chinese student association at a German university was explicitly asked by Chinese embassy officials to act as a spy. Additionally, publications from such groups have included political exhortations to support CCP efforts, such as reminding students that “you can take to the streets and shout for the motherland.” Similarly, remarks from Chinese Ambassador Shi Mingde at an event sponsored by Chinese student associations included a call to “turn patriotic feelings into patriotic deeds … tightly tie your own ideals to the destiny of the motherland,” before continuing with a directive to “bring science and technology back home, to push forward China’s economic and social development.” Members of Chinese student groups have noted that requests to transfer economic or research data can come with both financial inducements and appeals to national loyalty.
