Chinese state-affiliated cyber unit targets Biden and Trump campaign staffers

In June 2020, Google announced that Chinese state-affiliated hacker group APT 31 was targeting the personal email accounts of campaign staffers on both sides of the U.S. presidential race. The APT31 campaign emailed links to staffers enticing them to download legitimate software from the Github software download platform. Malware allowing the attacker to upload and download files would then be silently installed to the systems. One of the examples provided by Google was APT31 impersonating the popular McAfee antivirus software.
