Chinese official explicitly states that two Canadian prisoners could be released if the Canadian government stops the extradition of Huawei CFO Meng Wanzhou
In June 2020, remarks by an official from the Chinese Foreign Ministry made an explicit connection between Michael Kovrig and Michael Spavor, two Canadians detained in China, and the extradition proceedings of Huawei CFO, Meng Wanzhou. His remarks implied that a prisoner swap between the two nations is feasible. The Chinese, up and to this point, have repeatedly refuted claims that the detention and indictment of the two Canadians on espionage charges were retaliation for the legal proceedings against Meng Wanzhou. Additionally, the Chinese government has demanded the Canadian government put an end to extradition proceedings. The Canadian Prime Minister, Justin Trudeau, responded that the judicial system in Canada is independent and the federal government cannot intercede. Trudeau faces contradictory pressures from some parts of the Canadian political spectrum to be tougher on China, and from others to release Meng altogether.
