Chinese counterdemonstrators disrupt Vilnius rally supporting Hong Kong; official backing suspected

During the August 23, 2019 rally in Vilnius to support Hong Kong’s protests, a group of Chinese counterdemonstrators showed up and disrupted the event, with at least two individuals charged by police. Reports suggest that the counter protestors’ leader also heads the Chinese Chamber of Commerce in Lithuania, an organization established the same day as the rally. A Lithuanian MP in attendance claims to have seen the Chinese ambassador “personally observing from the side-lines.” As a result of Chinese authorities’ involvement in the counterprotest, the Lithuanian foreign minister summoned the Chinese ambassador and said that the Chinese diplomats had “crossed the line.” A Lithuanian intelligence report in February 2019 added China to the list of intelligence threats to the country, and noted that “China’s domestic policy issues drive Chinese intelligence activities in Lithuania,” expressly mentioning Tibet and Taiwan as flashpoints.
