On June 4, 2024, the investigative journalism platform Follow The Money and RTL Nieuws reported on a new Dutch political party receiving donations from several Chinese-Dutch associations with links to the CCP, notably from an organization affiliated with the Chinese United Front Work Department (UFWD). “Nederland met een plan” (NL PLAN) was founded in 2022 by Amsterdam-born entrepreneur Kok Kuen Chan. The party promotes strong ties between the EU and the PRC and aims to push back on alleged anti-Chinese rhetoric. Among its donors was the China Council for the Promotion of Peaceful National Reunification, an organization founded by the UFWD to promote Taiwan’s unification with mainland China. The PRC uses “United Front” work to co-opt and neutralize sources of potential opposition to the policies and authority of the CCP. The CCP’s UFWD—the agency responsible for coordinating these kinds of influence operations—mostly focuses on the management of potential opposition groups inside China, but it also has an important foreign influence mission.
