Berserk Bear – Germany implicates Russian hackers in attacks on German energy companies
On June 13, 2017, Germany’s Federal Office for Information Security, BSI, revealed that Russian hackers launched a widespread attack on German energy providers. According to BSI, the attackt dubbed “Berserk Bear” only breached the computers of a few companies. BSI did not reveal the total number of targets. A week later, Germany’s intelligence agency pointed to Russia as the perpetrator. As reported by Reuters, Hans-Georg Maassen, former President of the Federal Office for the Protection of the Constitution, stated, “The modus operandi is in fact one of multiple indications that point to Russian control of the attack campaign.”
