Europe and the United States have emerged as two key battlegrounds for state-backed disinformation efforts around the coronavirus pandemic. EU High Representative Josep Borrell has called disinformation around the coronavirus the “global battle of narratives.” U.S. Secretary of State Mike Pompeo said such campaigns are designed to “try and place confusion in the world” around the origin of the virus and governments’ response to it.
