In early February 2025, Canada’s Security and Intelligence Threats to Elections (SITE) Task Force detected a coordinated online information operation targeting Liberal Party leadership candidate Chrystia Freeland. The campaign originated from a popular anonymous WeChat news account linked to the PRC government, and involved over 30 WeChat news accounts publishing derogatory content about Freeland. SITE reported that the operation generated substantial engagement, with over 140,000 interactions between January 29 and February 3, and was visible to an estimated 2 to 3 million WeChat users worldwide. The goal was to undermine confidence in Freeland’s candidacy as she vied to replace Prime Minister Trudeau. SITE briefed Freeland’s campaign team and Liberal Party executives on February 7. Canada describes the SITE Task Force as the country’s “principal mechanism to monitor the threat from hostile state interference during elections”.
