On May 12, 2024, a fire at the Marywilska 44 shopping center in Warsaw destroyed one of the largest shopping centers in the city, displacing approximately 1,400 small businesses. Following a months-long investigation, Poland’s Internal Security Agency (ABW) determined that the arson was part of a broader Russian intelligence-directed sabotage campaign. Several individuals were arrested in connection with the attack, and Polish officials claim that orders were issued from within Russian territory. On May 12, 2025, Poland announced the closure of the Russian consulate in Kraków in response to the previous year’s fire. Poland’s foreign ministry described the consulate closure as a proportional response to hostile actions by the Russian state.
