Russian influence network produces videos falsely depicting 2024 election fraud

Days before the 2024 US presidential election, the Russian influence network Storm-1516 manufactured and amplified two videos that purported to show election fraud in swing states. The first falsely depicted mail-in ballots for Trump being destroyed in Bucks County, Pennsylvania. The second showed two Haitian immigrants claiming they would illegally vote at least twice in Georgia for Vice President Kamala Harris. Both videos were widely circulated on social media, notably on X, where they amassed hundreds of thousands of views. In a joint statement, the Office of the Director of National Intelligence (ODNI), the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI), and the Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency (CISA) claimed the videos were part of Russia’s broader strategy to undermine trust in the election and stoke divisions. A CNN investigation later revealed that a registered Russian agent based in Australia paid an unwitting conservative social media influencer in Massachusetts $100 to post the video. The influencer admitted this was not the first time the agent had paid him to post content.
