Chinese influence operation targets 2024 down-ballot races

In the months leading up to the 2024 US election, the Chinese state-linked influence network known as “Spamouflage” attempted to sway down-ballot races in Alabama, Texas, and Tennessee by denigrating candidates critical of China. The operation employed dozens of inauthentic accounts to post negative content about candidates who had publicly denounced the Chinese government and its policies, including Alabama Representative Barry Moore, Texas Representative Michael McCaul, and Tennessee Senator Marsha Blackburn, all Republicans. The accounts often accused the candidates of corruption or promoted opposition candidates. Microsoft reported that the network specifically criticized Moore’s support for Israel, frequently using antisemitic language.
