In November 2024, according to a report by Google’s Threat Analysis Group and security subsidiary Mandiant, the company’s security team removed hundreds of fake news sites linked to GLASSBRIDGE, an umbrella group of four China-based PR companies. The four firms — Shanghai Haixun Technology, Times Newswire, Durinbridge, and Shenzhen Bowen Media — operated a large network of inauthentic news sites posing as independent outlets, publishing content that supported the PRC’s political agenda, including narratives on Taiwan, Xinjiang, the South China Sea, and COVID-19. The report also explained that, since 2022, Google had blocked over 1,000 GLASSBRIDGE-linked sites from appearing in their search results. The sites targeted audiences across Europe, Asia, Africa, and the Americas.
