Pro-Kremlin hackers seek to sow doubt at start of EP elections

In June 2024, pro-Kremlin hackers targeted the European Court of Auditors in Luxembourg, the websites of several Dutch political parties, as well as various Irish institutions on the first day of the European elections. In the Netherlands, the parties affected by the attack were center-right Christian Democratic Appeal, far-right Forum for Democracy, and Geert Wilders’ Party for Freedom. The Irish Parliament, voter registration portal and transportation network were all affected by the attack. Hacker group HackNet later assumed responsibility for the cyber-attack on its Telegram channel. HackNet is a pro-Russian hacktivist group, considered to work in coordination with Russian intelligence services. An analyst at cyber-security firm warned that the attack was “superficial” and mainly aimed to “raise doubts in the security of the election”.
