Spain Summons Russian Ambassador Over Video Alleging Spanish Troops in Ukraine

On April 27, 2023, Spain’s Minister of Foreign Affairs, Jose Manuel Albares Bueno, summoned Russian Ambassador Yuri Klimenko regarding a video released from the Russian Embassy’s official X account (formerly known as Twitter). The video showed two soldiers speaking in Spanish in Ukraine next to statements by Spain’s Minister of Defense denying the presence of Spanish troops in the country. The Spanish military has no formal presence in Ukraine and the soldiers were likely from the International Legion, a unit of volunteers from around the world who fight under the supervision of Ukrainian intelligence. Published just days after the new ambassador had presented his credentials to the Spanish King, the video was promptly removed before Klimenko’s meeting at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.
