Russian government-backed hackers launched an unsuccessful phishing campaign that targeted 14,000 Gmail users, including journalists and members of NGOs and think tanks, according to Google’s Threat Analysis Group. The operation was carried out by a group known as APT28 or Fancy Bear, a hacking collective linked to Russia’s military intelligence agency and best known for breaching the Democratic Party ahead of the 2016 elections. A Google spokesman said that “100 percent” of the phishing emails sent to Gmail users were marked as spam and blocked. However, the spokesman noted that scale of the campaign stood out. The operation made up 86 percent of Google’s warnings to users in the month it was discovered.
